Description
-The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) invite research grant applications that will employ an integrative approach using state-of-the-art technologies to gain insight into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which chronic alcohol consumption leads to the development of cancers of various organs such as oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, large intestine, liver, and breast. This includes investigating roles of various factors such as acetaldehyde, cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), impaired immune function, and alcohol-induced impaired metabolism of s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), folate, betaine, iron, and vitamin A.. -This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will use the NIH R21 mechanism. -This funding opportunity will utilize the exploratory/developmental (R21) grant mechanism, but will be run in parallel with a program announcement of identical scientific scope (PA-06-269) that will utilize the traditional research project grant (R01). -Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. -Project Period and Award Levels: Applicants may request a project period of up to 2 years with a combined budget for direct costs of up to $275,000 for the 2 year period. For example, an applicant may request $100,000 in the first year and $175,000 in the second year. The request should be tailored to the needs of the project. Normally, no more than $200,000 may be requested in any single year. -Eligible Organizations: Domestic or foreign, for-profit or non-profit organizations, public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of state and local governments; eligible agencies of the federal government, and faith-based or community-based organizations. -Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs): Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH programs. -Applicants may submit more than one application, provided they are scientifically distinct.
