Description

Purpose. The NIH Directors Pioneer Award Program complements NIH's traditional, investigator-initiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering and possibly transforming approaches to addressing major biomedical or behavioral challenges. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect ideas substantially different from those already being pursued in the investigators laboratory or elsewhere. Awardees must commit the major portion (at least 51%) of their research effort to activities supported by the Pioneer Award. The NIH Directors Pioneer Award Program is a High-Risk Research initiative of Research Teams of the Future. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the DP1 grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of scientifically meritorious applications, NIH intends to commit approximately $6 million for at least 7 awards in fiscal year 2010.
