Description
Purpose. The NIH Directors New Innovator (DP2) Award program was created in 2007 to support a small number of early stage investigators of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative new research approaches that have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems in biomedical and behavioral research. The New Innovator Awards complement ongoing efforts by NIH and its Institutes and Centers to fund early stage investigators through R01 grants, which continue to be the major sources of NIH support for early stage. The NIH Directors New Innovator Award Program is a High-Risk Research initiative of Research Teams of the Future.
Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the DP2 grant mechanism.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of scientifically meritorious applications, NIH intends to commit at least $80 million in response to this FOA in fiscal year 2010. We anticipate that at least 33 awards will be made in fiscal year 2010.
